Thanks, that was a smooth solve. My favourite was 8a ("Spanish" should be capitalised, but that's just a typo I assume). 7a was also very neat - I wasn't sure about the definition, but they do appear as synonyms in plenty of thesauri, so I think it's sound. A little spoiler follows...
