Special Instructions: Recently I've been thinking about a different type of cryptic clue - a 'cipher clue'. In a cipher clue, one or more of the words in the clue encodes the answer using a simple substitution cipher - as in a cryptogram puzzle. For example, in the clue "Code-breaker's bubble burst", the answer POPPED ('burst') could be encoded by BUBBLE, where B=P, U=O, L=E and E=D. More details in the comments below...

Cipher indicators (ciphinds?) would indicate that one of the words in the clue (the 'cipher') is an encrypted form of the answer (or vice versa). This could be done explicitly using words/phrases relating to cryptography, or more subtly by using words/phrases that suggest pattern matching, similarity of form, or complete replacement/substitution. So...

Possible ciphinds could include: 1) in code, deciphered, enciphered, coder's, by a cryptographer, encoded, in secret, secretly hidden; 2) in solution, as an answer to, when solved, after working out; 3) patterned after, corresponding to, in letters of correspondence, characters like, matching pattern, pattern like, showing similarities to, similar in form, in a similar style; 4) could be a substitute for, substituted by, replacements for.

Other ideas: 1) Cipher should contain at least one repeated letter; 2) No letter in the cipher can represent the same letter in the solution; 3) Hash symbol could be used as a ciphind in annotated solutions

Thanks Dingo an interesting idea ... and after a slow start (wondering if the device was *too* tricky) all turned out to be surprisingly solvable in the end! So a fun exercise but ... spoilers ...
